The idea

Let's start a fresh farmstand next to every liquor and convenience store in Berkeley. All we need is some people from each neighborhood who can help.

Justice

In general, working people get the raw end of every deal, and "premium" foods are no exception. We want delicious food grown responsibly on family farms easily available to everyone, so we do the work ourselves.

Small

A supermarket almost never gets their food from small farmers. The quantities they deal in are simply too enormous. These farmstands we are creating will be small enough to deal directly with farmers, getting exactly the foods people in each neighborhood like to eat.

Best of all, a small stand two blocks away is within walking distance. We can create a future where cars and buses are rarely needed.

Cooperation

The world today is sharply divided into for-profit stores which charge customers high fees to have other people serve them, and non-profit attempts which usually give us a free ride on the hard-working backs of a handful of volunteers.

So, what if the customers were also the workers? This is the approach we're taking. Read about the Park Slope Food Co-op for inspiration.
